Professional Counseling

“I should be able to handle my own problems.”
“It’s too late for me to change.”
“You can’t teach an old dog new tricks”

When I hear statements like these, I politely respond, “balderdash.” I believe that everyone has the capacity to change and that it is never too late. Sometimes we just need a little help.

When should I consider counseling?

All of us experience times when we are sorting out emotions or dealing with life challenges that have us feeling confused, overwhelmed or just plain stuck. Sometimes we have thoughts, feelings or situations we would rather not discuss with friends or family. Confidential guidance from an objective, non-judgmental professional can help you define goals, make decisions and solve problems.

How do I choose the right counselor?

  1. Check to make sure your prospective therapist is licensed and in good standing in your state. This information is readily available on these websites:
  2. Ask the counselor his or her philosophy of counseling and areas of expertise. Does it fit with your thinking? Is it the type of help you need?
  3. Ask questions! If the therapist is evasive or you don’t feel comfortable with the answers, try someone else.
A good relationship between counselor and client is the key to effective counseling. I offer a complimentary phone consultation before you schedule your first appointment so you can decide if I’m the right therapist for you.

What types of issues are in your area of expertise?

I work with adults who are experiencing life transitions. Many of my clients have concerns or issues such as these:
  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Grief and loss
  • Relationships
  • Divorce
  • Dating and remarriage after 50
  • Relationships with adult children
  • Caring for aging parents
  • Dementia
  • Physical changes
  • Coping with illness and physical challenges
  • Grandparenting
  • Adjusting to retirement
  • Downsizing
  • Loneliness

What are your credentials?

I graduated from Baylor University in 1990 with a master’s degree in gerontology and have been a licensed professional counselor in Texas since 1991 and in Arkansas since 2010.

What happens in therapy? What should I expect?

Our initial session usually takes about an hour as I gather information about you and we discuss what you want to accomplish in therapy. After that, each session is 50 minutes. I most often use cognitive-behavioral techniques which means we will set goals and then work together to help you begin to make the positive changes you desire in your life. This is an active approach, so expect to do some homework outside of sessions.

What is Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy? (CBT)

Cognitive-Behavioral therapy is based on the theory that how we think largely determines how we feel and behave. Negative thoughts result in negative feelings and behavior. Therapy is a collaborative process of investigating and challenging the thinking that causes problems. CBT has been clinically proven to help clients with a wide range of problems, including depression and anxiety.

How long will it take?

Generally this type of therapy is relatively short-term but it depends on your goals. I’ve had clients resolve their issues in only one or two sessions and others who continued for much longer. Setting clearly defined goals will help us monitor your progress.

How much will it cost?

My fees are $95 per session. I do not offer a sliding fee scale but will work with you on flexible payment plans. I accept Aetna, Blue Cross, Ceridian, Cigna, ComPsych, LifeSynch, Magellan, New Directions and United Behavioral Health Care insurance plans.

Can you share information about me with someone else?

Not without your written permission. Confidentiality is a cornerstone of the counseling process. There are some exceptional circumstances dictated by our professional code of ethics and you will be given a written statement of the limits of confidentiality at your first session or upon request.

Where is your office?

My main office is located at 100 Ridgeway, Suite 1 in Hot Springs, Arkansas.  I also have an office near Hot Springs Village at 3822 N. Highway 7 in Suite 5.  To ask questions or to schedule your free consultation, call 501-538-4596 or use the contact form.  Or to schedule an appointment online, click HERE
